Link building

Anchor strategy: an anchor text plan for every page

Anchor strategy is a plan of which link texts point to each page of your site and in what proportion. Within the Link building service, Best Boost Partners compares your anchors with the profiles of the sites in your search results and sets the distribution between branded, URL, generic and keyword anchors. The work suits sites that buy or arrange links and want to avoid over-optimisation. You receive an anchor list for each target page and the rules for using it.

What exactly does an anchor strategy include?

  1. Export of current anchors

We export all anchors of the links to your site from link indexes such as Ahrefs and Majestic and from Google Search Console. The anchors are grouped by target page.

  2. Classification by type

Each anchor is assigned to a type: branded, URL, generic such as “here” or “on the site”, keyword, and mixed, where the brand stands next to a keyword. The table shows the share of each type for the site and for each page.

  3. Comparison with the niche norm

We build the same table for the sites that rank for your queries. The difference between your shares and theirs shows where the profile is over-optimised and where there is room for keyword anchors.

  4. Distribution per page

The home page, category pages and articles receive different proportions, because other sites link to them for different reasons. For each target page we set the share of every anchor type.

  5. Anchor list

We write the concrete anchors for the planned links, with variations in wording and word order. The same keyword anchor is not repeated across many donors.

  6. Rules and review

The strategy includes rules for the text around the link and for the order in which the anchors are used. After each batch of placements we recalculate the distribution and correct the anchor list.

What do you get with an anchor strategy?

  • A table of your current anchors by type and by target page.
  • A comparison of your anchor distribution with the sites in your search results.
  • Target shares of branded, URL, generic and keyword anchors for each page.
  • A ready anchor list for the planned placements.
  • Written rules for everyone who places links to your site, including your own staff and contractors.

When is an anchor strategy needed?

  • You are starting link building and want the anchors planned before the first placement.
  • Different contractors placed links for years, and nobody kept a record of the anchors.
  • A page with many keyword anchors lost positions for the very queries used in those anchors.
  • You place links yourself and need an anchor list and the rules for working with it.

Frequently asked questions

What share of keyword anchors is safe?

There is no single safe share of keyword anchors, because the norm differs between niches and between types of pages. We take the norm from the profiles of the sites that rank for your queries and keep your pages within it. The general rule is that branded, URL and generic anchors make up most of a natural profile.

Can the anchors of links that are already placed be corrected?

The anchor of a placed link can be changed if the owner of the donor site agrees, and we take on that negotiation. Where a change is impossible, the excess share of keyword anchors is diluted with new branded, URL and generic links.

Do I need an anchor strategy if I do not buy links?

An anchor strategy is useful without paid links too, if the anchors depend on you anywhere: in partner mentions, press materials, directories or your own network of sites. The anchor review also shows over-optimisation left by earlier contractors. If all links to your site are placed without your involvement, a single anchor review is enough.
