Website localisation into English, Russian and Ukrainian
Localisation EN / RU / UA means website localisation for a new language market: the texts are adapted to local search phrases, units of measure, currencies, legal wording and tone. A word-for-word translation leaves all of these as they were in the source. Within the Copywriting service, Best Boost Partners localises texts between English, Russian and Ukrainian, the three working languages of the studio. You receive language versions with their own title, description and headings, ready to publish.
What exactly do we do during localisation?
Local search phrases
We collect the phrases that people in the target market type. Translated source keywords serve only as a starting list and are checked against local demand and the local search results.
Units, currencies, formats
Measures, sizes, currencies, date and number formats are converted to those used in the market. Prices and examples are replaced with local ones where the source values mean nothing to the reader.
Legal wording
Terms of use, age limits, licence references and mandatory notices are worded as is customary in the target country. Passages that need a lawyer’s decision are marked in the document.
Tone and form of address
For each language we agree the form of address, the degree of formality and the vocabulary. A phrase that is neutral in English can sound dry or familiar in Russian or Ukrainian.
Title, description and headings
Meta tags and headings are written anew for each language from the local search phrases. Length limits are checked for each language separately: the same phrase takes a different amount of space in different languages.
Editing and consistent terms
An editor reads the language version as an independent text and checks the terms against a glossary. The glossary keeps product names, interface terms and brand wording the same on every page.
What do you receive after localisation?
- A list of local search phrases for each page of the language version.
- Localised texts with title, description and headings, ready to publish.
- A glossary of terms and brand wording for each language.
- A list of passages where the legal wording was changed, with notes for a lawyer’s review.
- A table matching the source URLs to the pages of the new language version.
When is localisation needed?
- A site in one language is opening an English, Russian or Ukrainian version.
- A language version already exists, but was made by direct translation and does not rank for local queries.
- A Ukrainian version is needed next to a Russian or English one, and the texts have to read as written in Ukrainian.
- An affiliate site or a store enters a market with a different currency, different units and different legal requirements.
Frequently asked questions
How does localisation differ from translation?
Translation carries the words of the source text into another language. Localisation collects the search phrases of the target market anew, converts units of measure, currencies and legal wording to local ones and sets the tone. A translated page can read correctly and still answer none of the queries typed in that country.
Which languages do you localise into?
We localise texts between English, Russian and Ukrainian, in any direction. English, Russian and Ukrainian are the three working languages of Best Boost Partners, so both writing and editing are done in each of them. Search phrases are collected separately for every language version.
Do keywords have to be collected again for each language?
Yes, keywords are collected separately for each language. A translated phrase may have no search demand, while the local wording of the same question is different. If the language version is part of wider work on the site, the keywords can be collected under Multilingual and regional SEO in the SEO promotion service.
