Drop domain search and analysis

Backlink analysis of expired domains

Backlink analysis is the stage of the service “Drop domain search and analysis” at which Best Boost Partners checks what the links of an expired domain are worth today. We take referring domains from link indexes such as Ahrefs and Majestic, check which links are still live, read the anchors and record which pages the links point to. The stage is for buyers who pay for link weight. You receive a list of working links and an assessment of the donors.

What exactly do we analyse in the backlinks of a domain?

  1. Referring domains

We export referring domains from link indexes such as Ahrefs and Majestic and merge the lists into one. Two indexes see different parts of the web, so a single source gives an incomplete picture.

  2. Live and lost links

Many links recorded in an index no longer exist: the page was deleted or the donor site closed. We check the referring pages and separate the live links from the lost ones.

  3. Anchors

The anchor list shows how other sites linked to the domain. Spam anchors and anchors in a language foreign to the site point to bought or automated links in the past.

  4. Pages the links point to

We record which pages of the old site the links point to. This list later decides which pages are restored and where each 301 redirect leads.

  5. Quality of donors

Each notable donor is opened and examined: whether the site is alive, what it writes about, whether it sells links in bulk. A few links from real sites of the same topic weigh more than a long list of directories and comment spam.

  6. Link history over time

The dates when links were gained and lost show how the profile grew. A sharp wave of links followed by an equally sharp loss usually means a campaign that someone bought and stopped paying for.

What do you get after the backlink analysis?

  • A merged export of referring domains from the link indexes, cleaned of duplicates.
  • A mark for each link: live or lost, with the date of the check.
  • An anchor list divided into brand, neutral, commercial, spam and foreign-language anchors.
  • A list of pages of the old site sorted by the number of live links.
  • A verdict on the link profile of each domain, naming the donors the profile rests on.

When is backlink analysis needed?

  • A domain shows strong link metrics and you want to know whether real links stand behind the figures.
  • You are choosing between several domains and need to compare what each one still holds.
  • You plan a 301 redirect and have to know which old pages receive the links.
  • You are restoring a site on a drop domain and need the list of URLs worth rebuilding.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the link metrics of a domain not enough?

Link metrics are calculated from the index of one tool and do not show whether the links still exist. Metrics can also be inflated with cheap links on purpose before a domain is sold. The analysis opens the referring pages themselves and shows what is left.

Which anchors are a bad sign?

A bad sign is anchors with commercial queries from a topic the site never wrote about, and anchors in a language the site never used. A natural profile consists mostly of the brand name, the address of the site and neutral words. The anchor list in the report is divided into groups, so the proportion is visible at once.

What happens to the links after a domain changes owner?

Some links stay, and some are removed by the donors once they notice that the site has changed. Search engines may also discount the links of a domain that changed owner and topic. For this reason the report counts only the links that are live on the day of the check and makes no promise about how long they will last.
