Drop domain search and analysis

History and spam checks for expired domains

History and spam checks are the stage of the service “Drop domain search and analysis” at which Best Boost Partners studies the past of a domain before you pay for it. We view snapshots in the Wayback Machine year by year and record what the site was, when the topic or language changed and whether there were periods of spam. The stage is for anyone who buys a domain for its history. You receive a verdict on each domain and the snapshots that support the verdict.

What exactly do we check in the history of a domain?

  1. Archive snapshots year by year

We open snapshots in the Wayback Machine for every year the domain was in use. The aim is to see what the site was in each period and where the archive has gaps.

  2. Changes of topic and language

A domain that turned from a local news site into a pharmacy catalogue in another language has usually passed through several hands. Every change of topic and language is dated and recorded.

  3. Periods of spam, doorway and adult content

We look for periods when the domain carried doorway pages, generated text, adult content or pages in an unrelated language. One such period is often enough for a rejection.

  4. Earlier use in link networks

The signs of a former PBN site are short posts on mixed topics with outgoing links to commercial sites. A domain that has already served in a link network is a weaker and riskier purchase.

  5. Earlier redirects

The archive and the link data show whether the domain was once redirected to another site. Such a domain is marked, because the search engine may already have stopped counting its links.

  6. Trademark and index status

We check whether the name contains a trademark that could bring a claim against the new owner. We also check whether the domain is still indexed, since absence from the index needs a separate explanation.

What do you get after the history check?

  • A verdict for each domain: clean, doubtful or rejected.
  • A timeline for each domain with the topic and language of the site in every period.
  • Links to the archive snapshots that show the problem periods.
  • A note on trademark risk in the name and on whether the domain is still indexed.
  • A list of archive gaps and other points that the available data does not explain.

When are history and spam checks needed?

  • You are about to bid at an auction and want to know the past of the domain before the bidding closes.
  • You have a list of domains with good link metrics and no knowledge of what stood on them.
  • You plan a 301 redirect to your main project and cannot afford a domain with a spam period.
  • You bought domains earlier and want to find out why search does not accept some of them.

Frequently asked questions

Which signs in the history lead to a rejection?

A domain is rejected for periods of doorway, generated or adult content, for use in a link network and for another company’s trademark in the name. A sharp change of topic and language is a reason for a closer look and often ends in a rejection as well. The table states which sign was found and in which year.

What if the Wayback Machine has few snapshots of the domain?

Such a domain is marked as doubtful, because a past that cannot be seen cannot be called clean. We add what the link data shows: the dates when links were placed and the anchors of that time. If the two sources together still leave a gap, the gap is recorded in the table.

Does a clean history mean the domain is safe?

No. A clean history reduces the risk and does not remove it. Search engines may discount the links of a domain that changed owner and topic, even when everything in the archive looks normal. The history check shows what is visible from outside, and the verdict is worded with that in mind.
